About this item
- Hardneck Garlic Bulbs for planting grow into flavorful homegrown garlic with firm bulbs, large individual cloves and distinctive curling scapes, making them an excellent choice for vegetable gardens, raised beds and kitchen gardens
- Cold hardy hardneck garlic benefits from fall planting and winter chilling before producing vigorous green spring growth; choose full sun and fertile, well drained soil where developing bulbs will not remain in soggy conditions
- Separate bulbs into individual cloves shortly before planting, keep the papery skins intact and place each healthy clove pointed end upward about 2-3 inches deep and approximately 4-6 inches apart for room to develop
- Hardneck varieties naturally produce curling garlic scapes as they mature; harvest tender scapes if desired, then continue growing the plants until several lower leaves brown and mature bulbs are ready to lift from the soil
- Freshly harvested garlic can be cured in a dry shaded location with good airflow for later kitchen use; individual bulb size, clove count, skin coloration and harvest timing naturally vary with variety and growing conditions
Description
Hardneck Garlic Bulbs for planting produce flavorful homegrown garlic with firm bulbs, large individual cloves and the distinctive curling flower stalks known as garlic scapes. These garlic planting bulbs are ideal for vegetable gardens, raised beds, kitchen gardens and edible home landscapes. Hardneck garlic is especially suited to regions with cold winters because exposure to winter chilling supports normal bulb development. Plant individual garlic cloves in fall for green spring growth, early summer scapes and mature garlic bulbs ready for harvest later in the season. Homegrown garlic can be used fresh from the garden or cured after harvest for later kitchen use. Separate each garlic bulb into individual cloves shortly before planting, keeping the papery skin around each clove intact. Plant the largest healthy cloves with the pointed end facing upward approximately 2-3 inches deep and space them about 4-6 inches apart. Choose a location with full sun, fertile well drained soil and enough space for each plant to develop without crowding. Fall planting allows cloves to establish roots before winter and receive the cold period associated with hardneck garlic growth. Green shoots emerge as conditions warm in spring. Keep the garden reasonably weed free and provide consistent moisture during active growth without allowing the soil to remain waterlogged. Hardneck garlic produces a distinctive curling scape as plants mature. Scapes can be cut while young and tender if desired. Harvest garlic bulbs when several of the lower leaves have browned while some upper foliage remains green. After harvest, cure bulbs in a dry, shaded location with good airflow before trimming or storing.
